I'm David Drewelow, Head Coach, ActionCOACH Heartland Firm.

I am on a great adventure.

The vision of our firm is a 'coach in every business.'

Our purpose is to 'help people change the way they think.'   

Fulfilling our purpose will help the vision of our firm to become a reality.  As we move toward our vision our coaching will improve businesses, create more jobs and dramatically grow our economy.  All three are critical to our future success.  The work that ActionCOACHes do in coaching businesses helps accomplish all three.  We work with one business at a time, which we call it 'grass roots economic development.'  And the only way we can make it happen faster is by getting more coaches on our team.  So, our immediate goal for this year is to add 12 people to the Heartland Firm, which will help us to meet the demand for coaching in our local markets.

My story...  

The summer after high school I started my first business. What started as a job to paint one house led to four summers of painting hundreds of houses, barns, buildings and a few other interesting projects. Upon graduating from the University of Northern Iowa, my crew included three college buddies and I enjoyed my freedom, flexibility and financial reward. It was then that I fell in love with the idea of being a life-long business owner.   

However, upon graduation I gave up my painting business because I believed that my education was to prepare me for a corporate job. Needless to say, between my first business experience and growing up with an entrepreneurial dad, being a business owner was my on-going dream. And during my 25 years prior to joining ActionCOACH I looked at every job as if it was my own business.  That attitude served me well in my experiences of non-profit management, radio/television consulting, radio production & sales, newspaper marketing and ad agency sales.

In 2000 I started looking at business opportunities in earnest.  After careful consideration, in 2002, I purchased the ActionCOACH Master Territory for Iowa.  Two years later we added Nebraska.  Today I have a team that provides marketing and coaching support for the coaches in our territory.  I coach, mentor, teach, train and speak to thousands of business owners and leaders on local, regional and national levels. It's a passion of mine and I love it!  And each business coach on my team does many similar things as well.

I got into business coaching because I saw, as a kid, how difficult it is to be in business for yourself.  My dad and mom struggled in their business, many times working long hard hours to make ends meet for our family with eight kids.  Being a business owner is not easy.  Business failure rates of 80%+ in less than five years is simply NOT acceptable!  The business world seems to accept this statistic with the idea that you can't do much about it; like failure is the price you may have to pay when you go into business for yourself.  Well, I disagree and our firm is on a mission to change this. 

As ActionCOACHes we make a difference in the lives of business owners, their employees and their community.  We know there is a better way and we have the systems, experience and drive to help more business owners to not only survive, but to thrive.  Just imagine the impact you could have as a coach by helping someone to NOT go out of business - how would that make you feel?

You gotta have passion and heart... 

One of the first traits we look for in new coaches is passion.  You must be passionate about wanting to help others and have a heart for people.  These are two traits that we initiall look for in every potential coach that could join our firm.  Many believe both are essential in order to be a great coach. 

Secondly, we look for people with sales experience.  Selling is critical in every successful business.  In order to bring on clients you must first get people to attend seminars to help them learn more about what we do.  You must have the ability to build relationships with people.  Most importantly, in order to get people to ‘buy’ from you they must first know, like and trust you.  If you don't have sales experience, then you willneed to be open to learning how to sell.  At ActionCOACH we have a proven system that we will teach you. 

Being a business owner, or an executive that has run a company, is a third area of experience that we look for in candidates.  Wherever you are, your business experience will help you as a coach, plus you also must be open to learning our proven processes and systems for business success.
